The two sliders do not touch -- their interaction is mediated through the bolt assembly, which they both touch.

Here, the inner lock slider is in the "unsafe" position. If the outer lock slider is facing away, it will be unable to lock or unlock the bolt!

If the situation is reversed, a person inside the house will be unable to unlock the door.
