This is a starling that I found dead when West Nile was first becoming a concern on the east coast. I didn't have time to call Animal Control to have them take it in for testing, so I put it under a bucket under a tree, with several rocks on the bucket.
When I rediscovered it about 15 months later, this is how I found it -- mummified. This scanner image is one of my favorites.
I still have the body.
